The History of the Cross Necklace

In this blog post, we will discuss the history of cross necklaces.

The history of the cross necklace starts with Lord Jesus Christ carrying the cross up the hill to the mount on Calvary.  The cross is sometimes referenced as “the cross of Calvary”.

Early Christians in Ephesia started using the cross as a symbol of their belief in the death of resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Messiah Savior.  As such, it was also a symbol of liberation and freedom.

It could be considered analogous to the new flag of a newly independent country.  As Lord Jesus declared His Kingdom to come, believers were free from condemnation and fear.

Wearing symbols on necklaces was already common at that time in history when Jesus Christ came, was crucified, and resurrected from the dead.

As the cross became a symbol of their faith, it was a normal progression for the cross to be worn as a necklace also, since necklaces were frequently used for such symbols. However, early Christians especially in Roman cities like Athens or Jerusalem risked martyrdom by doing so. Wearing the cross in those days defied both Roman pagan tradition and Jewish religious authority.

It was a powerfully defiant act of fearlessness, an expression of their faith, and a figurative way of showing they were also carrying their own cross as they followed Lord Jesus.  It represents both Jesus’s obedience and submission to following God and the believer’s obedience and submission to following Christ Jesus.

Over time, wearing the cross as a necklace became commonplace. In free countries, wearing the cross is widely accepted as an expression of faith in the form of free speech and free choice in personal style that is both peaceful and non-offensive to other faiths.

Christian and Catholic Churches frequently give new believers cross necklaces at the time of their baptism which some wear for the rest of their lives as symbols of their dedication to faith.

Today, we have the blessings of a wide selection of cross necklaces that can be easily ordered online and shipped directly to one’s door.

Cross necklaces now days are used as both necklaces and a way to conveniently carry a cross.  It is common in today’s world to see a cross hanging from a car’s rear view mirror.

Crosses have spiritual power associated with the proven power, strength, authority and might of Lord Jesus Christ’s loving, protective, healing, and saving abilities. There are countless testimonials of the cross saving lives and thwarting evil.
